The People’s Law education department is a vital component of the People’s Legal Centre, dedicated to improving access to justice through education and empowerment. Our goal is to train community paralegals who will serve as advocates within their communities, providing crucial legal assistance and knowledge to those who may otherwise be excluded from the legal system.

The People’s Law Paralegal Training Course spans five months and is designed to equip participants with a comprehensive understanding of the legal landscape in South Africa. Throughout the course, we unpack how laws are written, how courts function, and how paralegals can provide meaningful assistance to individuals without access to expensive legal systems. The course consists of the following modules:

Law & Power

This module explores the foundations of South African law, examining who has the authority to write and enforce laws. Participants learn how power dynamics influence legal frameworks and how they can advocate for justice within their communities.

Labour Law

Understanding the main pieces of legislation governing labour relations in South Africa is crucial for community paralegals. This module covers workers’ rights, employer obligations, and the mechanisms available for resolving labour disputes.

Debt

Many individuals find themselves trapped in cycles of debt. This module discusses the legal remedies available for debt relief and the importance of financial literacy in avoiding predatory lending practices.

Family Law, Wills, & Estates

Participants learn about various marriage types in South Africa, including civil, customary, and religious unions. We delve into the legal ramifications of each, alongside the importance of wills and estate planning for ensuring that families are protected.

Refugee Law

With a focus on the rights of foreign nationals, this module examines the laws that protect refugees and asylum seekers in South Africa. We also address the issue of xenophobia and its impact on vulnerable populations.

Queer Rights

This module empowers participants to use the law to protect the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals. We explore the legal frameworks that promote equality and the ongoing challenges faced by the queer community in South Africa.

Community & Constitutions

Participants learn how to collaborate with their communities to create organizational guidelines that align with the South African Constitution. This module emphasizes the importance of community engagement and participatory democracy in fostering social justice.
